UP: Supreme Court Adjourns Hearing On Atiq’s Plea, Lawyer Seeks Time To Submit Documents

The Supreme Court has postponed the hearing on the petition seeking protection of Atiq Ahmed in jail for a week. Atiq has said in this petition that his family is being falsely implicated in the Umesh Pal murder case. A bench of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice Bela M Trivedi postponed the hearing on the demand of Atiq’s lawyer.

Atiq’s counsel sought time to submit some additional documents. The matter was listed after a request was made for urgent hearing before the Chief Justice, the bench said. When the matter came up for hearing today, the counsel for the petitioner expressed his inability to argue. Let the matter be listed after a week.

In his petition, Ahmed referred to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s statement on the floor of the UP Assembly that he would destroy Atiq completely. Atiq has said that he and his family are in real danger. Uttar Pradesh Police will try their best to get him transit remand from Ahmedabad Jail to Prayagraj and they fear that he will be killed while being taken to UP.

Ahmed has also sought to ensure that no physical injury is caused to him during police remand or interrogation. In the petition, Atiq has also sought a direction to restrain the UP government from moving him from Ahmedabad jail to Prayagraj or any other part of UP.
